Well, 2020 was quite a year, but it wasn’t all bad! One of the profound gifts I received was the invitation to join a small group of friends who began swimming in the ocean at dawn. Now, despite the fact that I’ve lived less than a mile from the beach for two decades, I was never one to dive in on a regular basis. Between seeing Jaws as a kid (and being terrified of sharks ever since) and generally not wanting to get wet, I managed to stay content sitting on my towel while my kids went boogie boarding.
Then the pandemic hit. And everything changed.
It’s funny how sometimes it takes getting really uncomfortable to ignite the desire to experience something NEW AND EXCITING. When my friend Annie told me about the light at dawn that dances on the surface of the waves, or about the dolphins jumping so close you could almost touch them – it was thrilling, and I wanted IN. But swimming in the ocean had another scary element for me – THE WAVES.
This is my journey – the journey of overcoming the fear of the waves so that I could enjoy the profound beauty on the other side. Beyond the crashing waves, I got to experience another world. Dolphins, sea lions, pelicans, and more – in their element. Shimmering light on the surface of the water from the sunrise. Stillness and quiet from the noises of the city.
This story is how I learned to swim through my fear, but I don’t want to teach you how to swim in the ocean. Instead, I’m sharing my methods I used so that you can swim through ANY FEAR.
